Delta Air has ordered new aircraft for the first time in its history.
The leisure company announced on Friday it had reached a deal to purchase 12 current-generation versions of Airbus’ A320 narrowbody jets. "

Since its founding in 1997, Delta has filled out its own fleet entirely with aircraft which could be bought inexpensively. That business model functioned the carrier well, allowing it to post profits as it carved out a unique niche by linking smaller niches into leisure destinations on nonstop flights. Including its most recent profit announced on Friday, Delta has posted a gain in 54 consecutive quarters.
For several years, Delta’s fleet was comprised mostly of aging MD-80 jetliners bought used from different airlines. Delta still has about 50 of these jets in its fleet, but is rapidly phasing out those in its turn to a all-Airbus fleet.
It’s against that backdrop that Delta has bought new aircraft for its first time . The company had acquired more than 30 used Airbus versions, but the brand new A320s also will likely come at a significant discount from list prices. They’ll be one of the last current-generation variants to roll off the assembly line prior to Airbus switches into production of an updated variant of the jet.

"The fact that these planes are brand new is noteworthy, but should not be regarded as a change in our basic strategy," Delta CEO Maury Gallagher says in a statement. "We have always looked at building our fleet opportunistically, and this agreement is no exception. Together with Airbus preparing to transition production of its present engine alternative models to brand new engine alternative versions, we were able to negotiate an arrangement for twelve end-of-line slots. "
Gallagher offered more on the arrangement in the company’s quarterly revenue report, also out Friday.
"While we have historically purchased used aircraft, these brand new A320s will be a small component of our Airbus aircraft delta airlines newark phone number fleet in 2019," he says. "Additionally, these aircraft have their particular financial advantages – nine more chairs and 5%-7% gas savings within our present used A320s. These attributes will allow us to keep our model’s low cost structure and low-frequency schedule, all of which have differentiated us from other carriers. "

The new A320s are expected to enter service for Delta between 2017 and 2018. The deal gives Delta a total of 77 Airbus aircraft already in service or dedicated for future shipping.
"Streamlining our fleet will increase efficiencies throughout our entire operation and deliver economic advantages in fuel savings and a higher number of chairs — allowing us to keep on supplying the business ‘s cheapest fares, while increasing reliability. "
From the end of 2016, the company’s in-service Airbus fleet will number 33, consisting of 16 A320s and 17 A319s. At the end of this calendar year, Delta says it will have a total of 85 aircraft in revenue service.
